Consuming hard food, crackers, nuts, or attempting to chew on the side where the surgery was performed creates excessive pressure on the titanium structure. Even minor trauma can dislodge the post and cause its subsequent rejection.

For the first few weeks, the diet should consist exclusively of soft, pureed, and comfortably warm food. Returning to a regular, solid menu should be gradual and only after approval from the dental implantologist based on check-up results.

Tobacco Smoking and Alcohol Consumption During Rehabilitation

Nicotine and tars contained in cigarettes and electronic smoking devices exert a powerful vasoconstrictive effect on oral capillaries. This causes persistent ischemia—impaired blood microcirculation and oxygen deficiency in tissues that require enhanced nourishment for rapid healing.

In smokers, the risk of developing peri-implantitis and implant loss increases severalfold compared to non-smokers. Alcohol, in turn, suppresses local immunity, is incompatible with prescribed antibiotics, and dilates blood vessels in the first hours after surgery, triggering prolonged bleeding and the formation of extensive hematomas.

Specialists strongly recommend completely quitting smoking at least two weeks before surgery and refraining from the habit for at least two to three months afterward. This allows blood vessels to recover and ensures full osseointegration without the risk of tissue necrosis.

Unauthorized Discontinuation or Adjustment of Medication

Following surgical intervention, the doctor prescribes a course of medical therapy, which usually includes antibacterial drugs, anti-inflammatory agents, painkillers, and special oral rinse solutions. This regimen is developed considering the scope of the operation, health status, and potential risks.

A common mistake is stopping antibiotics immediately after severe pain or swelling subsides. An untreated bacterial infection can transition into a hidden chronic form, causing slow destruction of the bone tissue around the implant without acute symptoms. Self-prescribing additional medications without consulting the dentist is equally dangerous.

Strict compliance with the schedule and dosage of all prescribed drugs is a fundamental condition for preventing infectious complications. If side effects or allergic reactions occur, it is necessary to inform the doctor immediately for a safe medication substitute.

Thermal Procedures and Physical Exertion

In the first days after implant placement, the vascular network in the surgical area remains very fragile. Any factor that increases blood pressure or causes blood vessel dilation can lead to recurrent bleeding, increased swelling, and internal hematoma formation.

Visiting saunas, steam rooms, taking hot baths, prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as well as intense sports training and heavy lifting are strictly contraindicated for the first 10–14 days. Creating additional pressure in the head area can cause suture disruption and allow infection to penetrate into deeper bone layers.

During the rehabilitation period, preference should be given to a calm lifestyle, moderate walks, and adequate rest. This ensures blood clot stability and accelerates the primary epithelialization of the wound surface.

Skipping Follow-up Exams and Professional Hygiene

A successfully performed surgery is only half the journey. Osseointegration lasts from three to six months, during which time the condition of the bone and gums must be monitored by a specialist through visual examinations and targeted X-rays.

Ignoring scheduled clinic visits prevents the timely detection of early signs of inflammation or bone loss, which are completely painless in the initial stages. Professional cleaning of teeth and implants in the dental office using special ultrasonic tips and powders is a mandatory procedure at least twice a year.

Only regular monitoring allows for the detection of the slightest deviations from the norm and the taking of necessary measures before destructive processes become irreversible. Preserving an implant is a shared responsibility between a qualified doctor and a conscious patient.
