During the Appointment

Treatment of adentia (missing teeth) is a comprehensive dental process aimed at restoring anatomical integrity, chewing function, and smile aesthetics. Adentia can be partial (absence of one or several teeth) or complete, as well as primary (congenital) or secondary (acquired as a result of caries, periodontitis, or trauma).

The doctor performs an examination, determines the type of adentia, assesses the condition of the teeth, gums, oral mucosa, and bite for planning orthopedic rehabilitation.
A CT scan is performed to analyze the volume and density of bone tissue, the presence of atrophy, and the location of anatomical structures for the purpose of planning implantation or bone grafting.
Based on the examination, the treatment method is selected: implantation with crowns, implant-supported prosthetics (All-on-4 / All-on-6), bridge or removable dentures. The patient is explained the options, timelines, and cost.
Preparatory stages are planned: oral sanitation, gum treatment, bone grafting or sinus lift (if necessary).
The patient is presented with a step-by-step treatment plan, an anesthesia method (local anesthesia or sedation) is selected, and questions are answered.
After the surgical stages, recommendations are provided and follow-up visits are scheduled. Following implant osseointegration, prosthetics are performed and regular ongoing monitoring is conducted.

Modern Treatment of Adentia

Treatment of adentia is a comprehensive dental process aimed at restoring anatomical integrity, chewing function, and smile aesthetics in cases of partial or complete absence of teeth.
2

3D Diagnostics as the Foundation for Successful Prosthetics

A key stage in the treatment of adentia is precise preoperative planning. Before starting therapy, we always perform a computed tomography scan.
3

Autotransplantation: "Transplantation" of Your Own Tooth

One of the innovative methods for treating partial adentia that we use is autotransplantation — the movement of the patient's own tooth (for example, a wisdom tooth) to the site of an extracted one.
4

Maximum Comfort During Treatment

Understanding that the surgical stage of adentia treatment can cause fear, we pay special attention to patient comfort. All interventions are performed under powerful local anesthesia, which guarantees absolute painlessness.
5

Rehabilitation and Long-Term Monitoring

Adentia treatment does not end in the operating room. We offer comprehensive patient support at all stages of recovery.

Indications for the Use of Transplantation in Adentia Treatment

As part of the treatment of partial adentia, the method of autotransplantation is most often used to replace the first permanent molars (6th teeth), which are often destroyed or extracted in childhood and adolescence.
In the case of fresh trauma with tooth loss, transplantation is an excellent alternative to implantation for replacing a dentition defect, especially in cases where standard adentia treatment is impossible for medical reasons.
In some cases, adentia treatment is complicated by the presence of impacted teeth (most often canines or premolars) that cannot be moved into the dental arch using orthodontic methods due to their incorrect position or ankylosis.
Patients come to BIOCLINIC in Lviv for adentia treatment when they face the need to remove a hopeless tooth and wish to restore it using the most physiological method — with their own tissues. During the consultation, the surgeon conducts a thorough examination and a mandatory computed tomography scan to assess the possibility of using transplantation.

Types of Surgical Interventions in Adentia Treatment Using Transplantation

Image

Tooth Transplantation with Incomplete Root Formation

This method of treating partial adentia is used mainly in children and adolescents, when the donor tooth (most often a wisdom tooth or premolar) has an incompletely formed root apex (open apex).
Image

Transplantation of a Tooth with a Formed Root

For adult patients with completed jaw growth, the treatment of adentia uses the method of transplanting a donor tooth (most often a third molar) with a fully formed root and closed apex.
Image

Tooth Transposition (Surgical Position Correction)

This method is used to eliminate adentia for orthodontic purposes, when a tooth is in an incorrect position (for example, an impacted canine or premolar) and cannot be moved into the dental arch using traditional methods.
Image

Use of Third Molars (Wisdom Teeth) for Defect Replacement

The most common type of transplantation in the context of adentia treatment, when an impacted or semi-impacted wisdom tooth is used as a donor to replace a destroyed first or second molar that is scheduled for extraction.

Stages of Adentia Treatment Using Autotransplantation

By contacting BIOCLINIC with a problem of tooth loss or the need to remove a hopeless tooth, you will receive professional help and comprehensive treatment aimed at restoring the integrity of the dentition with maximum use of your own tissues.
1

3D Diagnostics and Assessment of Donor Potential

The first and mandatory stage of adentia treatment is computed tomography (3D scan). It allows obtaining comprehensive information about the condition of the potential donor tooth (most often a wisdom tooth or premolar): its exact location, length, shape, number of roots, degree of their curvature, and stage of formation.
2

Planning of the Surgical Stage

Based on the CT data, the surgeon develops a detailed intervention plan. The optimal extent of surgical access for isolating the donor tooth, the method of its atraumatic extraction with maximum preservation of the periodontal ligament, as well as the method of forming a new socket in the recipient area are determined.
3

Surgical Intervention: Tooth Harvesting and Transfer

The operation is performed under local anesthesia with modern drugs (in complex cases or with increased patient anxiety — with the use of sedation). The doctor first carefully isolates the donor tooth, using microsurgical instruments to maximally preserve the periodontal ligament around the root.
4

Fixation and Creation of Conditions for Healing

After placing the tooth in the new socket, the doctor carefully checks its position, occlusal contacts, and stability. Special splints (most often made of orthodontic wire and composite material) are used for reliable fixation, which is necessary for successful adentia treatment.
5

Rehabilitation and Long-Term Monitoring

After the operation, the patient receives detailed individual recommendations, including medication support (antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, painkillers) to prevent complications and improve microcirculation. A follow-up visit is scheduled after 7-10 days for suture removal.

Postoperative Care and Rehabilitation After Transplantation

In the first 7-10 days after the surgical stage of adentia treatment, you need to brush your teeth extremely carefully, using only a soft brush and carefully avoiding the area of the transplant, sutures, and fixing splint. It is strictly forbidden to traumatize the surgical area with a toothbrush.
It is strictly forbidden to actively rinse the mouth during the first 3-4 weeks after the intervention, as this can disrupt the process of new blood vessel formation (revascularization), damage the delicate tissues of the forming periodontal ligament, and cause tooth displacement.
Take all medications prescribed by the doctor: antibiotics (mandatory full course to prevent infectious complications and transplant rejection), anti-inflammatory drugs, painkillers, as well as medications to improve blood microcirculation in the intervention area.
To reduce significant swelling, pain, and prevent hematoma in the first 24-48 hours after surgery, it is recommended to apply a cold compress to the cheek in the projection of the operation (not on the wound itself!) for 10-15 minutes with breaks of 30-40 minutes.
For the healing period (first 3-4 weeks), completely avoid hard, hot, spicy, and acidic foods. Soft, warm (not hot!) food is recommended: pureed soups, thin porridges, yogurts, smoothies, baby food purees.
Do not miss the follow-up examinations scheduled by the doctor — they are critically important for the final success in adentia treatment.

Advantages of Adentia Treatment Using the Transplantation Method at BIOCLINIC

Immediate Resolution of the Tooth Loss Problem

We accept patients with an urgent need for tooth restoration (traumatic loss, failed endodontic treatment, extraction of a hopeless tooth) on the day of request, without weekends or holidays. Timely replacement of a dentition defect using the transplantation method allows immediate resolution of the adentia problem using the patient's own tissues.

3D Planning and Precision Diagnostics

Before each intervention, we always perform a computed tomography scan for detailed 3D planning. This allows us to accurately assess the anatomy of the potential donor tooth (most often a wisdom tooth): length, shape, number of roots, stage of their formation, as well as the volume and quality of bone tissue in the recipient area.

Maximum Preservation of Periodontal Tissues

Our surgeons are proficient in specialized microsurgical techniques for isolating the donor tooth, which allow maximum preservation of viable periodontal ligament cells on the root surface. These cells are responsible for forming a new connection between the tooth and the bone in the recipient area.

Absolute Comfort During the Surgical Stage

All interventions are performed under powerful local anesthesia with modern drugs that guarantee painless treatment. Considering the complexity and duration of transplantation surgery (often over 60-90 minutes), as well as for patients with increased anxiety, we offer sedation (medically induced sleep).

Long-Term Support and Results Monitoring

After transplantation, the patient receives detailed individual recommendations and individually selected medication therapy: antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, painkillers, as well as medications to improve microcirculation.

What is tooth transplantation and how does it help treat adentia?
Tooth transplantation (autotransplantation) is a surgical procedure for moving a patient's own tooth from one area of the jaw to another to replace a dentition defect. Most often, wisdom teeth or premolars serve as donors, which are transplanted to the site of lost first or second molars.
Is it always possible to find a donor tooth to eliminate adentia?
Unfortunately, not always. The success of transplantation as a method of adentia treatment depends on the availability of a suitable donor tooth (most often a wisdom tooth) and its compatibility with the recipient area. During the consultation, we always perform 3D diagnostics to assess the anatomy of the potential donor: length, shape, number of roots, and stage of their formation.
Is transplantation painful and how long does the operation take?
Modern anesthesia completely eliminates pain during the operation. You may feel slight vibration or pressure, but no pain. Considering the complexity of the procedure, for patients with increased anxiety we offer sedation (medically induced sleep), which allows you to undergo the surgical stage of adentia treatment absolutely comfortably.
What are the chances that the tooth will take, and will additional treatment be needed?
With proper patient selection and high-quality procedure performance, the success rate of transplantation as a method of adentia treatment reaches 80-90%. Further tactics depend on the stage of root formation: If the root is incompletely formed (open apex) — high chances of maintaining vital pulp; endodontic treatment is not required. If the root is fully formed — 2-4 weeks after transplantation, endodontic treatment (nerve removal and canal filling) is performed to prevent complications. In any case, long-term monitoring is necessary (X-ray at 1, 3, 6, 12 months) to confirm successful integration of the tooth into the dentition.
What risks exist with transplantation in the upper and lower jaw?
As with any surgical intervention for adentia, there are certain risks that depend on the anatomical area. In the lower jaw, the main risk is associated with the proximity of the donor tooth (especially the wisdom tooth) to the inferior alveolar nerve — possible temporary numbness of the lip or chin. In the upper jaw, the risk is associated with proximity to the maxillary sinus. To minimize these risks, we always use 3D planning, which allows us to accurately determine the location of all anatomical structures and choose the safest tactic. Our surgeons have extensive experience in performing such interventions.
How long does the transplant take to heal and when will I be able to chew normally?
The healing process after transplantation as part of adentia treatment is lengthy and occurs in several stages: Primary soft tissue healing — 7-14 days, sutures are removed after 7-10 days. Initial engraftment (revascularization) — first 4-8 weeks, the tooth remains under a splint, chewing load is strictly prohibited. Complete restoration of the periodontal ligament and bone — from 6 to 12 months. Gradual inclusion of the tooth in chewing is possible only after removal of the splint (usually after 2-3 months) and only with the doctor's permission. Throughout the healing period, it is important to follow recommendations and come for follow-up examinations to ensure long-term success.
