During the Appointment

Tongue frenuloplasty is a minimally invasive intervention to correct a short or abnormally attached frenulum, which can cause speech disorders, discomfort during eating, and bite problems. At BIOCLINIC, the procedure is performed using modern surgical and laser techniques with atraumatic instruments, after preliminary assessment of the degree of tongue mobility limitation and functional disorders.

The doctor assesses the length and attachment of the tongue frenulum, range of motion, impact on speech, bite, and gum condition. A medical history is taken to determine indications for correction.
If necessary, additional diagnostics, bite analysis, and consultations with an orthodontist or speech therapist are performed for comprehensive treatment planning.
The method of intervention is determined: frenotomy, frenectomy, or frenuloplasty (including laser) depending on the clinical situation.
The operation plan is developed, the type of anesthesia is selected, and further rehabilitation (if necessary — myogymnastics or speech therapy correction) is determined.
The patient is explained the course of the procedure (15–30 minutes), pain relief is selected (local anesthesia or sedation), and preparation recommendations are provided.
Postoperative recommendations are provided, a follow-up is scheduled in 7–10 days, and the functional result is assessed.

Tongue frenuloplasty: modern correction

1

Modern tongue frenuloplasty

Tongue frenuloplasty eliminates restricted tongue mobility, which causes speech disorders, difficulty eating, bite defects, and discomfort. At BIOCLINIC, the procedure is performed using modern surgical or laser techniques after assessing the degree of tongue restriction and frenulum type, ensuring minimal trauma, painlessness, rapid healing, and a long-lasting result.
2

Comprehensive diagnostics — the foundation of precise planning

Before tongue frenuloplasty, a thorough examination is performed: the length, thickness, elasticity of the frenulum, tongue mobility, bite condition, and lower incisors are assessed, and if necessary, an orthodontist or speech therapist is involved. This allows determining indications, selecting the optimal method, and predicting the functional outcome.
3

Surgical and laser correction of the tongue frenulum

The most effective method for eliminating ankyloglossia is surgical correction of the tongue frenulum: incision, excision, or frenuloplasty with formation of the correct position. Modern laser technology minimizes bleeding, reduces swelling, and shortens recovery, while atraumatic sutures ensure rapid and aesthetic healing.
4

Maximum comfort during the procedure

We understand that any surgical intervention can cause concern, so we pay special attention to patient comfort. Tongue frenuloplasty is performed under modern local anesthesia, which ensures complete painlessness.
5

Rehabilitation and result monitoring

After tongue frenuloplasty, the patient receives detailed individual recommendations for postoperative area care and dietary regimen. If necessary, anti-inflammatory and painkillers, as well as antiseptic treatments, are prescribed to prevent complications.

Indications for tongue frenuloplasty

One of the main indications for tongue frenuloplasty is restricted tongue mobility, which affects speech and swallowing function. A short or tight frenulum can complicate the pronunciation of certain sounds, cause tension during conversation, form incorrect compensatory movements, and disrupt the development of the speech apparatus in children.
A short frenulum of the tongue can cause gum recession, mobility of the lower incisors, and bite disorders.
A separate indication is difficulty with breastfeeding in infants or functional disorders during eating in older children and adults. A short frenulum can interfere with proper latching, cause pain in the mother, and insufficient weight gain in the child.
Patients come to BIOCLINIC in Lviv when they encounter functional or orthodontic problems associated with a short tongue frenulum and seek to resolve them in a modern and safe way. During the consultation, the doctor performs a detailed clinical examination, assesses the degree of tongue mobility restriction, its impact on speech, bite, and the condition of soft tissues. If necessary, related specialists — an orthodontist or speech therapist — are involved to form a comprehensive treatment plan.

Types of surgical interventions for tongue frenuloplasty

Image

Frenulum incision (frenotomy)

Frenectomy is a more radical intervention that involves complete removal of the tongue frenulum along with its attachment area to the floor of the mouth mucosa. The method is used in cases of pronounced ankyloglossia, when incision is insufficient to restore normal tongue function.

Frenulum excision (frenectomy)

Frenectomy is a more radical intervention that involves complete removal of the tongue frenulum along with its attachment area to the floor of the mouth mucosa. The method is used in cases of pronounced ankyloglossia, when incision is insufficient to restore normal tongue function.

Frenuloplasty with formation of a new attachment

This method is used in complex cases of ankyloglossia, when the frenulum is short, thick, or attached too close to the edge of the lower incisors. During the intervention, the doctor not only removes the restrictive tissue but also moves the tongue into a physiologically correct position, forming a new attachment of the frenulum.

Laser frenulum correction

Laser tongue frenulum correction is a modern and maximally gentle method. It allows removal or incision of the frenulum without bleeding, reduces operation time, and minimizes postoperative swelling. The method is suitable for both children and adults and is often used instead of traditional surgery for mild to moderate forms of ankyloglossia.

Stages of surgical intervention for tongue frenuloplasty

When contacting BIOCLINIC with the problem of limited tongue mobility, speech difficulties, or swallowing problems, you will receive professional help and comprehensive surgical treatment aimed at restoring tongue function and eliminating discomfort.
1

Frenulum assessment and 3D diagnostics

The first stage is a clinical examination and assessment of the anatomical features of the tongue and frenulum. The doctor determines the length, thickness, attachment point of the frenulum, the degree of tongue mobility restriction, and its impact on speech and bite. If necessary, 3D scanning or photo documentation is performed, allowing for a detailed assessment of the floor of the mouth structures.
2

Surgical access planning and intervention technique

At this stage, the doctor selects the optimal method for frenulum correction: incision (frenotomy), excision (frenectomy), or frenuloplasty with formation of a new attachment. The incision location, need for suturing, and use of a laser or microsurgical instruments are determined.
3

Surgical intervention

The procedure is performed under modern local anesthesia or, if necessary, with sedation for patient comfort. The doctor carefully incises or removes the frenulum, forms a new attachment of the tongue, and, if necessary, places atraumatic sutures.
4

Wound closure and monitoring

After the procedure is completed, the surgeon monitors the condition of the oral mucosa and, if necessary, secures sutures or uses techniques that promote fast and aesthetic healing. The patient is provided with instructions for caring for the postoperative area and special exercises to restore full tongue mobility.
5

Rehabilitation and Long-Term Follow-Up

After the surgery, the patient receives individualized recommendations, including a soft diet, antiseptic care, and, if necessary, the use of anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medications. A follow-up examination is conducted within 7–10 days to assess tissue healing and remove sutures. Subsequently, the doctor evaluates the full recovery of tongue mobility, the effectiveness of speech therapy rehabilitation, and the overall functional outcome.

Postoperative care and rehabilitation after tongue frenuloplasty

In the first 7–10 days after surgery, clean the mouth and tongue as gently as possible. Use only a soft brush or cotton/gauze swabs soaked in an antiseptic solution, avoiding trauma to the intervention area.
Active rinsing of the mouth is prohibited in the first 1–2 weeks to avoid disrupting the healing process and damaging the blood clot that ensures tissue regeneration.
Take all medications prescribed by the doctor: anti-inflammatory and painkillers, if necessary — antibiotics to prevent infectious complications, as well as agents to accelerate healing and improve microcirculation in the intervention area.
To reduce swelling and pain in the first 24–48 hours after surgery, it is recommended to apply a cold compress to the cheek near the postoperative area (not on the wound itself!) for 10–15 minutes with 30–40 minute breaks.
In the first 2–3 weeks after surgery, you should avoid hard, hot, spicy, and acidic foods. Soft, warm foods are recommended: pureed soups, liquid porridges, yogurts, smoothies.
Do not miss follow-up examinations: the first one after 7–10 days to assess tissues and remove sutures, subsequent ones according to the doctor's schedule, which guarantees complete healing, restoration of tongue mobility, and a long-term result.

Advantages of frenulum correction at BIOCLINIC

Urgent resolution of frenulum problems

We accept patients with discomfort or limited mobility of the tongue or lips (difficulty speaking, pain, mucosal irritation). Timely frenulum correction allows eliminating the cause of discomfort, preventing bite pathologies, speech problems, and mucosal trauma.

Precision diagnostics and planning

Before the intervention, a detailed examination and, if necessary, 3D examination of the oral cavity are performed. This allows precise determination of the frenulum type, its length and attachment point, assessment of tongue or lip mobility, mucosal condition, and interaction with adjacent structures.

Maximum preservation of healthy tissues

Our specialists use microsurgical techniques or laser methods, which allow atraumatic correction of the frenulum without excessive damage to the mucosa and surrounding tissues.

Absolute comfort during surgery

All interventions are performed under powerful local anesthesia. Sedation (medication-induced sleep) is available for patients with high anxiety.

Long-term control and support

After the procedure, the patient receives detailed recommendations on oral care, restriction of physical activity, and specific dietary habits in the first days after the intervention. Follow-up examinations are scheduled after 7–10 days to assess healing and adjust sutures (if a surgical technique was used).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Заповніть форму і ми передзвонимо для запису на консультацію

What is frenulum correction and in what cases is it needed?
Frenulum correction eliminates restrictions in tongue or lip mobility, improves speech, articulation, and prosthesis function, prevents mucosal trauma, and enhances oral aesthetics.
Is it always possible to completely eliminate the restriction of tongue or lip mobility?
Not always. The success of the procedure depends on the type of frenulum, its length, anatomical features of the mucosa, and the general condition of the patient's oral cavity. During the consultation, the doctor assesses all these factors, performs an examination, and, if necessary, additional diagnostics. In some complex cases, combined treatment with speech therapy correction or orthodontic procedures is required to achieve maximum results.
Is the operation painful and how long does it take?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, which completely eliminates pain. The patient may feel slight pressure or tissue tension, but not pain. Sedation is available for people with high anxiety, making the procedure completely comfortable. The duration of the intervention is usually 15–30 minutes, depending on the complexity of the case. After the operation, moderate discomfort may occur, which is easily controlled with medications prescribed by the doctor.
How long does the postoperative area take to heal and when is the result visible?
The first days after the intervention involve healing of the mucosa and reduction of swelling, usually 7–10 days. Complete adaptation of tongue or lip mobility, improvement of speech, and normalization of oral function takes 2–4 weeks. If necessary, the doctor schedules follow-up visits to assess the healing process and make additional corrections. If recommendations are followed, the result lasts for a long time.
How to prepare for surgery and what can and cannot be done after it?
Before the procedure, it is recommended to have professional oral hygiene and eliminate possible inflammatory foci. On the day of surgery, you should not eat for 2–3 hours before the intervention if sedation is not planned. After the procedure, strictly follow the doctor's recommendations: do not touch the wound with your tongue or hands, avoid intense physical activity, hot drinks and food for the first 1–2 days. For 1–2 weeks, avoid hard, spicy, or hot food, brush your teeth gently, and use antiseptic oral baths. Be sure to attend a follow-up examination after 7–10 days to assess healing and remove sutures if they were used.
What are the features of rehabilitation after frenulum correction?
After the procedure, the patient receives individual recommendations for quick and safe healing. During the first 1–2 days, it is advisable to apply cold to the cheek to reduce swelling and discomfort, avoid intense physical activity, hot food and drinks. For 1–2 weeks, you should brush your teeth gently, rinse your mouth with antiseptic solutions, avoid traumatizing the postoperative area with your tongue or hands, and follow a gentle diet. The doctor schedules a follow-up examination after 7–10 days to assess the condition of the mucosa, remove sutures if necessary, and provide further recommendations, as well as speech therapy exercises if needed to normalize tongue or lip mobility. Following all recommendations ensures rapid recovery, full functionality, and a long-lasting result of the procedure.
